Jivitputrika or jitiya Jivitputrika or jitiya is a festival celebrated for the well being and prosperity of the children. Mothers fast and pray for the long life of their kids. This is mainly celebrated in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand & Uttar Pradesh. When and how to celebrate Jivitputrika/ jitiya This is a 3 days festival and starts from seventh lunar day of Krishna-Paksha in Ashvin month to ninth lunar day. As per english calendar, this festival is celebrated in September. These three days are celebrated as 1.Nahai – Khai (Satwmi) 2.Khur Jitiya or Jivitputrika day (Asthami) 3.Paaran (Naomi)
Nahai khai – This is the preparatory day and as per the rituals – Mothers take bath in the morning and take food. The food generally consists of – Pua, Kheer, Sevai Khur Jitiya or Jivitputrika day The actual festival day. Mothers observe whole day fast. They do not take water, for almost 24 hours or more. The Search for Cuisine Bihar

Dear readers,


First of all apology for such a long gap. Actually I was touring Bihar & Jharkhand for my next project.

There are so many things to share, but the most important thing that I want to discuss is the hospitality,level of excitement, warm resposnce and willingness to share their knowledge, the recepies and other facts.

I am humbled, touched by their response and thank all of them who helped me in one form or other.

Amongst all, I would first like to tell about a lady, who impressed me in a very limited period of time.

On my journey from Patna To Barh, in Danapur Durg Express, I saw a lady sitting in front of me. She was getting number of calls and was busy with the conversation. I was taking some photographs, these photographs includes some of the scenic beauty out side train and some of the food items that the venders were selling. After some time, she asked me quite polietely – Are you doing any project. Yes , I replied (polietely, offcourse) Actually I am researching the cuisine bihar, and I will write about the local food,I added further. She became quite for a moment. I thought, she is not going to accept me as a food writer. I have already written book on Indian Cuisine and this time I am trying my hand on Cuisine Bihar, I added to prove myself. She opened up immidietely and said – I also like cooking and I make extremely good biryanies.

Now, I got shocked.. it was a pleasant surprise to hear this word (Biryani) from a lady in Bihar. Good, I said appreciating her skills. How do you make it, I enquired and honestly speaking I was more than 90 % sure that she will not give me a correct method for making biryani. But, I proved to be wrong. And Ms Noshin , a lady from Patna, who is an Urdu Teacher, gave me the authentic recipe for a Biryani.

I got extremely impressed with her, and I felt happy for cuisine Bihar, that it has various fold that needs to come out in front of every one.

Bihari people are truly very good at heart. Mehman is like bhagwan still exist in Bihar. Bhujia parantha is one of the very popular meal that is being served to every guest. One of the favorite meal of Cuisine of Bihar is Dal, bhat and Tarkari.
